Getting Vaccinated
You probably heard about the first of three vaccine mass distribtuion sites that operated last weekend at City College, by invitation only. In gernal, vaccination for Covid-19 takes place through your healthcare provided (eg. Kaiser, Sutter, Dignity, UCSF) as well as SF DPH for those with no medical coverage or on Medicaid or Healthy SF. The main challenge we're facing is lack of supply, via distribution from the federal government's allocation to states. And the City has a goal of getting everyone in SF vaccinated by June. You can sign up for notications here.
We learned this morning that two San Franciscans have confirmed cases of COVID-19, also known as coronavirus. This afternoon, SFUSD learned that a relative of a Lowell High School student is being treated for COVID-19. Out of an abundance of caution and for the safety and well-being of our community, SFUSD has decided to close Lowell High School and all events and gatherings for the time being. Lowell Students who receive transportation services will maintain their regular schedule today and will be dropped off at their usual time and usual location. Lowell will not be open on Friday and will share an updated message with parents, students, and staff before Monday. The two COVID-19 patients in San Francisco had no prior contact with other confirmed cases, and no recent travel to areas with widespread transmission, which means it is likely there is community spread of COVID-19 here in San Francisco. We should not panic, but we should be prepared. We previously declared a Sate of Emergency locally to prepare for this, began local testing earlier this week, and are stepping up our staffing and resources. The novel coronavirus does not discriminate by race or ethnicity, and neither should we. The best ways for us all to stay healthy are similar to strategies to avoid catching the cold or flu:
If you feel cold or flu-like symptoms, stay home, and call your doctor before going in-person.
Wash your hands frequently for 20 seconds with soap and water
Avoid handshakes and hugs and use alternate greetings instead
Make sure you have any necessary medicine, food, pet food, etc. on hand in case you have to stay home sick
What about masks?
You don't need to get masks, and if you have some, you should probably save them in case someone in your home gets sick -- they're most effective for helping sick people avoid spreading germs, and aren't very effective if you aren't already sick. What about hand sanitizer?
Hand sanitizer is good to use, but handwashing is just as good, so don't feel like you need to run out to try to find hand sanitizer -- just wash your hands properly and frequently.I know this situation is scary, and a Lowell High School parent myself, I share your concerns. But know that the City has been preparing for this, and if we all follow best practices and information from experts, and avoid misinformation and discrimination, we will have far better public health outcomes. For additional questions, I encourage you to call 311, or email us at marstaff@sfgov.org. Thank you,
Supervisor Gordon Mar
