As the school year begins and SNBC programs get underway, it would be a shame if we didn’t take a moment to look back and reflect on our wildly successful summer program this year a.k.a “Camp SNBC“!
SNBC’s Site Coordinator for the afterschool program at Ulloa, Ms. Rebecca Wong, gives us her highlights from the summer program and why she thinks this summer was an extraordinary one for SNBC and all the youth participants:
CAMP SNBC 2014 was very successful. Based on family surveys, youth and their families all enjoyed what our summer program had to offer. A lot of the feedback we received noted that our academic classes didn’t feel like “school” but families still felt that their children learned a lot! The variety of extra-curricular classes that the students were able to participate in also received high marks.
At this summer’s CAMP SNBC 2014, youth attended literacy, recreation, science, and an extra-curricular class each day. Some of my personal favorite activities that I saw during the summer were a 4th grade literacy class in which the youth wrote persuasive paragraphs to try to convince their teacher that they deserved a class party to end the summer. The teacher included a “Convince-O-Meter” to make the process interactive and more engaging. On the sports end of the spectrum, a basketball class where youth learned fundamentals of the game and worked on drills to practice these skills was very popular. Science experiments were also a daily occurrence! Among the different activities, 4th graders studied the human skeleton and our body’s systems.
Throughout the summer, Camp SNBC youth also went on field trips to the San Francisco Zoo, California Academy of Sciences, Exploratorium, and Treasure Island Sailing Company for some time out on the Bay! To cap things off, we had a program-wide carnival. Youth participated in different games to earn prizes. There was also a food booth and a photo booth.
We had an amazing group of staff that were sourced from all our different afterschool programs. From coordinators, to class instructors, to program leaders, everyone worked well together and got along very well. Both staff and students created great memories that will propel them into the school year and beyond!
