2016-2017 AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM APPLICATIONS NOW AVAILABLE
The After School Beacon Program at A.P. Giannini Middle School is open every school day from 3:35pm to 6:35pm. The Hub is located in Room 230 at A.P. Giannini Middle School [CLICK HERE FOR MAP].
Young people at Beacon can expect an afternoon broken into four blocks: Supper, Tribe, Project-Based Learning Club and Community Time. At Supper, youth sign themselves into our program after the last school bell and are provided with a district meal. During Tribe, youth meet with their classmates in a structured setting to work on homework. Project-Based Learning Clubs run in 12-week cycles and are selected by youth at the beginning of each cycle. At the end of their daily club, youth are welcome to sign themselves out with parental permission or have free time in the cafeteria, yard or computer lab.
The Project-Based Learning Clubs at A.P. Giannini give young people an introduction to various recreational and enriching content areas: Coding, Break Dance, Urban Music Program, Sports, Cooking, Hip Hop Dance, Science, Drama, and Urban Art. Our Program Leaders come from various professional backgrounds and are active, passionate educators of their chosen club topic. Partner organizations provide additional programs: Spoken Word, Financial Literacy, Writing Workshop, Creative Movement, World Music, Biking and more!
Three times a year and at the end of each 12-week cycle, Beacon groups are invited to showcase their work at an event called Beacon Fest. Families, APG Faculty, and the Community are invited to see an afternoon full of visual and performative projects. In addition to this, Beacon loves to host seasonal community-building events such as school dances and parties. Our groups participate in SNBC events including Free Family Movie Night and our annual Film Festival.
